Definition of air passenger duty

Air passenger duty (APD) is a per passenger charge on air travel from UK airports (other than the Scottish Highlands and Islands and long haul flights from Northern Ireland). The level of duty varies depending on the class of travel (with economy class having a smaller charge) and the distance travelled. APD is not chargeable on air freight. APD was extended to business jets from April 2013 and, from 1 1 March 2016, an exemption was introduced for children under 16 flying economy.
