Definition of economic sanctions

Restrictions imposed on trade with (or investment in) a particular country with the aim of persuading that country's government to make an important policy change. Sanctions can include a trade embargo - the banning of all commercial shipments in and out of a particular country. An embargo can also be placed on a particular product (such as the oil embargo imposed by OPEC in the 1970s)
