Definition of troll (online)

A troll is someone who deliberately makes provocative and/or derogatory comments. The practice has become so widespread that the word is also sometimes used as a verb. Trolling can take place on someone's social media profile, on Twitter, in the comments field of a YouTube video or indeed anywhere where a troll thinks it might cause offence, because that is the intention. Trolling can be extremely serious and has included threats to women who have campaigned for women's rights and messages left on vulnerable teenagers' social media profiles telling them to commit suicide.
