Definition of patient capital

The term patient capital can be used to describe any capital invested for the long term. In recent years, however, it has increasingly been used to describe long-term investment in socially responsible ventures by investors who might be looking for non-financial as well as financial gains.

In April 2014 the chief executive of the International Integrated Reporting Council called for the debate on high frequency trading to refocus on how to get patient capital to market. Ordinary pension fund savers and retail investors deserved to know, he argued, how their money was being put to use to create long term value.
