Definition of rediscount

To discount a bill or other money market instrument that has already been discounted once by a bank. A central bank may lend funds to a commercial bank in this way - the commercial bank buys the short-term paper at a discount then rediscounts it with the central bank (i.e. the central bank buys the paper from the commercial bank) to boost its reserves.
